How does tractor and farm equipment hauling work?

Farm machines are wide and tall even when folded for the road. A John Deere 8R 410 tractor on single tires is about 8 ft 6 in wide, right at the legal limit, and 11 ft 8 in tall, so its tire setup and the trailer's deck height decide whether it needs a permit. A John Deere S790 combine is 12 ft 11 in wide and 13 ft 4 in tall with its header off, so it needs width and height permits on any trailer.

Headers come off and travel on their own cart or trailer; John Deere's operator's manual tells owners to avoid public roads with the header attached. How do you transport a combine?

The header comes off and goes on a header cart or its own trailer, outside dual wheels come off if fitted, and the grain tank extensions and unloading auger are folded. The base machine then rides on an RGN or step deck. At about 13 ft tall on its own, a large combine is over the height limit on any trailer and moves on a height permit.

Does tractor hauling need a permit?

Not always. A row-crop tractor like the John Deere 8R 410 on single tires sits right at the 8 ft 6 in width limit (John Deere publishes widths of about 100 to 102.5 in) and is 11 ft 8 in tall, so with narrow tires on a low deck it can travel at legal size. It depends on the machine's width and height on the trailer, the miles, and the permits and pilot cars each state requires for wide loads.
