How are power transformers transported?
Distribution transformers and generator sets under about 50 tons move on standard heavy haul trailers with routine permits. Large power transformers of several hundred tons need multi-axle extendable trailers or SPMTs (self-propelled modular transporters), superload permits in every state, route surveys and sometimes bridge reviews, so the planning takes weeks before the unit moves.

How does transformer shipping work?
The U.S. Department of Energy calls units rated 100 MVA and up large power transformers, and puts their weight at roughly 100 to 400 tons. They ship drained of oil, which is about 19% of the weight, with radiators and bushings removed, sealed under dry nitrogen or dry air and fitted with impact recorders that are read on arrival.
Rail on Schnabel cars is the most common long-distance mode, so a road move is often the last leg from a rail yard or port. That leg needs permits from each road owner, bridge checks, multi-axle hydraulic trailers and sometimes temporary power-line moves. We book the heavy-haul carrier for it, and for smaller units that travel by road all the way.
