What does an oversize load need in Illinois?
An IDOT permit from the Springfield Permit Office, filed through ITAP. Fees depend on size and distance: a load up to 10 ft wide pays $12 to $21, and one over 18 ft wide pays $50 to $125. IDOT permits cover state roads only, so Chicago streets, Cook County roads and the Illinois Tollway each need their own permit.

Heavy haul and oversize freight in Illinois
Chicago, the country's largest rail hub, sits at the top of an Illinois Interstate grid: I-55 to St. Louis, I-57 to southern Illinois, I-80 and I-88 west toward Iowa, and I-90/94 to Wisconsin and Indiana. Oversize freight here mixes farm machinery in central Illinois, construction equipment around Chicago, and plant equipment moving to and from the Metro East near St. Louis.
Chicago is also where most Illinois routing problems start. Cook County expressways turn away loads over 12 ft wide, 13 ft 6 in high or 120,000 lbs outside four short corridors, city streets need a City of Chicago permit, and the Tollway runs its own system. What are the legal size and weight limits in Illinois?
Under the oversize load regulations in Illinois, a load above any of these limits needs a state oversize or overweight permit.

On Class I and II designated highways Illinois sets no overall length for a tractor-semitrailer; on non-designated roads the combination is limited to 65 ft.
Who issues Illinois oversize permits?
IDOT's Bureau of Operations Permit Office in Springfield issues oversize and overweight permits through ITAP (Illinois Transportation Automated Permits). Those permits are good on state-jurisdiction roads only.
Local roads, City of Chicago streets, Cook County highways and the Illinois Tollway each issue their own permits, and the Tollway asks for the IDOT permit number before it issues one. The carrier's permit service files each application; we work out which agencies a route touches.

What do Illinois oversize and overweight permits cost?

Worked example: a 13 ft wide, 15 ft high combine moving 150 miles at legal weight
It fits IDOT's third size class (up to 14 ft wide and 15 ft high), and 150 miles falls in the 90 to 180 mile band, so the over-dimension fee is $30. At 15 ft high it needs one civilian escort carrying a height pole, and it may travel in daylight on any day of the week.

What hours can oversize loads move in Illinois?
- calendar_today Up to 14 ft 6 in wide, 15 ft high and 200 ft long: half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, seven days a week.
- calendar_today Up to 16 ft wide or 17 ft high: the same daylight hours Monday to Friday, plus Saturday until noon.
- calendar_today Over 16 ft wide or 17 ft high: 9 AM to 3 PM, Monday to Friday only.
- calendar_today Overweight loads within legal size: any hour, any day. Over-dimension loads up to 12 ft wide, 13 ft 6 in high and 200 ft long can also run at night with the extra escort.
- calendar_today Chicago and Metro East counties: loads 14 ft 6 in to 16 ft wide can be held to 9 AM to 3 PM on weekdays when the permit says so.

Seasonal weight limits in Illinois
Illinois has no statewide frost-law calendar. Under 625 ILCS 5/15-316, counties, townships and cities can restrict or reduce weights on their roads for up to 90 days a year once signs are posted, and IDOT holds the same power on state highways. Spring pickups on township and county farm roads deserve a check of local postings.
