How is mining equipment moved?

Large mining machines are usually taken apart and shipped as several loads, because a whole haul truck or shovel is far over legal width and weight. Each piece rides on an RGN, lowboy or multi-axle trailer sized to its weight, and the heaviest pieces need superload permits. Delivery to a remote mine also depends on the access road and the lifting equipment on site.

Mining equipment is built for the pit, not the highway. A Cat 992 wheel loader is 15 ft 10 in wide, 18 ft 3 in tall and about 233,000 lbs in shipping form, and a Cat 395 excavator 207,400 lbs. Machines this size often move as several loads, with buckets, counterweights and front linkages on separate trucks, and the heaviest pieces travel under superload permits.

Articulated haul trucks usually move whole: a Cat 745 is 12 ft 6 in wide and 73,000 lbs, and a Volvo A40 11 ft 2 in and 69,200 lbs. We book the carriers for each piece, plan the order the loads arrive at the site, and coordinate permits and escorts for routes that often end on remote roads.

How much does mining equipment transport cost?

Every piece is priced as its own load: its trailer, miles, permits and escorts, plus any superload engineering review. A 70,000 lb articulated truck on one RGN costs far less than a large loader or excavator that ships as several loads with superload permits for the heaviest piece. Can you transport off-highway haul trucks?

Articulated trucks such as the Cat 745 and Volvo A40 ride whole on an RGN under width and overweight permits. Rigid ultra-class haul trucks like the Cat 797 are far too large for any road, so they are shipped as a kit: body, frame, axles and tires on separate trucks, then assembled at the mine.

Do you serve remote mine sites?

Yes. We need to know the access road's surface, grades, bridge and cattle-guard ratings, and the turning room at the pad, because those decide which trailer setup can reach it. Some sites need the load transferred to a site trailer at the gate.

What permits does mining equipment need?

Most pieces need oversize and overweight permits in every state on the route, and the heaviest need superload permits with a route survey and bridge analysis. Thresholds differ by state: Ohio treats a load over 120,000 lbs or 14 ft wide as a superload, and Texas requires its Super Heavy permit above 254,300 lbs.

Can you move mining equipment bought at auction?

Yes. Auction yards are common pickup points for used mining equipment. Send the lot number, yard address and pickup deadline, and say whether the machine runs, and we book carriers for the base machine and its attachments. Machines that do not run need a winch-equipped trailer or loading equipment at the yard.
