Nebraska Oversize & Overweight Permits for Heavy Haul

Nebraska permit rules, legal limits and escort triggers, and how we book heavy haul carriers for moves in and through the state.

Quick answer

Do I need a permit to move an oversize load in Nebraska?

Yes, once the load is wider than 8 ft 6 in, taller than 14 ft 6 in or heavier than 80,000 lbs on the Interstate. NDOT's permits carry flat fees with no mileage charge: $15 for oversize, $20 for overweight and $25 for both, ordered online. Over-dimensional loads move in daylight, while overweight-only loads can travel around the clock.

Heavy haul and oversize freight in Nebraska

Nebraska is mostly an I-80 state for heavy haul: the Interstate runs its length from Omaha and Lincoln through Grand Island, Kearney and North Platte toward Wyoming, carrying wind turbine parts, farm machinery and plant equipment between the Midwest and the Mountain West. Ag equipment, irrigation and grain handling, and energy projects make up much of the in-state freight. We book carriers for moves within Nebraska or across it.

Nebraska's permits are cheap and quick, and its time rules are specific. Over-dimensional loads move in daylight and stop for holiday windows, Omaha and Lincoln close their highways to them at weekday peak hours, and on Husker home game days permitted loads cannot move in the eastern part of the state. We plan around game days as well as holidays before quoting.

What are the legal size and weight limits in Nebraska?

Under the oversize load regulations in Nebraska, a load above any of these limits needs a state oversize or overweight permit.

Width 8 ft 6 in
Height 14 ft 6 in
Semitrailer length 53 ft
Gross weight 80,000 lbs
Single axle 20,000 lbs
Tandem axle 34,000 lbs

Limits are set by Neb. Rev. Stat. 60-6,288 to 60-6,294. Nebraska's legal height is 14 ft 6 in, and away from the Interstate its bridge table reaches 95,000 lbs on seven axles.

Who issues Nebraska oversize permits?

NDOT's Permits Office in Lincoln issues permits through its online truck permit system and does not enter applications for carriers. A single trip permit is valid for up to 10 moving days, an overweight permit is issued only to a vehicle registered for its maximum legal gross weight, and fees are never refunded.

NDOT permits cover state and US routes and Interstates only. Omaha and Lincoln issue their own street permits, and county roads follow NDOT's county list; for wide loads the county office expects notice even where it issues no permit.

What do Nebraska oversize and overweight permits cost?

  • request_quote Over-dimensional only: $15. Overweight only: $20. Both: $25. There are no mileage, weight or dimension bands.
  • request_quote One amendment is allowed, for $10.
  • request_quote Continuous envelope permits: $25 per 90 days, up to $100 a year.
  • request_quote A 2026 law lets NDOT raise permit fees and add superload fees of up to $800 by weight, so the charged fee is confirmed when the permit is ordered.
  • request_quote City of Lincoln street permits: $15 to $20 for a single trip.

Worked example: a 15 ft wide, 140,000 lb load across Nebraska on I-80

The permit costs $25, the same as for a short trip, because Nebraska charges no mileage. At 15 ft wide the load needs one escort, behind it on I-80, though on NDOT's listed divided segments rear-facing amber lights on the trailer can take the escort's place. Below 160,000 lbs it is not a superload.

Nebraska pilot car and escort requirements

  • local_police 12 to 16 ft wide: a single escort within 300 ft of the load, leading on undivided highways and trailing on divided ones.
  • local_police On NDOT's listed freeways and divided segments, rear-facing amber lights on the trailer can replace the rear escort.
  • local_police 125 to 150 ft long: one escort.
  • local_police Over 16 ft wide or 150 ft long: escorts front and rear, and loads over 150 ft need a pre-run route survey and 60 miles between loads traveling together.
  • local_police 16 ft tall or more: a pole car in front, a pre-run survey filed on NDOT Form 85, and an affidavit confirming every electric utility along the route was contacted.
  • local_police Escort vehicles carry a roof light visible at 800 ft and OVERSIZE LOAD signs, and Nebraska sets no escort driver certification.

Seasonal weight limits in Nebraska

Nebraska has no statewide frost-law calendar. NDOT can restrict axle weights for a time when pavements are weakened by weather, and counties and cities can cut weights on their roads for up to 180 days a year once signs are posted; Custer County, for example, posts 15-ton limits for semis during thaw. Over-dimensional permits are also invalid on roads slippery from ice, snow, slush or frost.

FAQ

Nebraska Oversize Load Questions

Permits, escorts and travel rules for oversize moves in Nebraska.

How much is a Nebraska oversize permit?
NDOT charges a flat $15 for an over-dimensional permit, $20 for overweight only and $25 for both, with no mileage or weight bands. An amendment costs $10. A 2026 law raised the fee caps and allows superload fees of up to $800 plus NDOT's costs, so the amount is confirmed when the permit is ordered.
Can oversize loads travel at night in Nebraska?
Over-dimensional loads are limited to daylight, give or take half an hour at each end, unless the permit specifically allows night travel. Loads that are only overweight, within legal size, may travel at any hour on any day, holidays included, though they still respect posted bridge and road limits.
What is the Husker game-day embargo?
On University of Nebraska home football game days, no permitted load may use the highways inside the area bounded by the Iowa line, NE-14, the Kansas line and NE-91. Overweight-only permits are exempt. An I-80 load has to be past Lincoln by Friday sundown, at Exit 395 heading west or Exit 409 heading east.
What is a superload in Nebraska?
Under a 2026 law, any non-divisible load past 16 ft in width, 15 ft 11 in in height, 150 ft in length or 160,000 lbs gross is a superload. NDOT's Permits Office must approve it, with Bridge Division or district review where needed, and loads 16 ft or taller also need a route survey and contact with the electric utilities on the route.
When does a Nebraska load need an escort?
From 12 to 16 ft wide one escort is required, in front on undivided roads and behind on divided ones, and trailer lights can replace the rear escort on listed freeway segments. Over 16 ft wide or 150 ft long the load needs escorts front and rear, and loads 16 ft or taller need a pole car.
